If you’re considering buying a pull up bar for your home but don’t know which one to get, we know how confusing that can be. Many of the options that you see in a store look very similar to each other but can vary quite a bit on price. First, you have to narrow down a pull up bar based on location of installation. A wall or ceiling pull up bar will be the most secure type because you use mounting hardware to fix them to joists or studs in the ceiling or wall. If you can’t get a ceiling one, the best wall mounted pull up bar is an equal in our book.

A pull up bar mounted to wall is not for those who can’t drill holes in their home. In that case, we suggest a door frame bar that uses leverage or tension to stay up. They’re not as strong as wall or ceiling mounted, though, so if you can, choose wall or ceiling mounted.

When choosing a bar, first check that your wall stud spacing is the standard 16″ apart. If not, you may have to build a frame on which to install the device. 24″ is the next standard but some new houses don’t use either spacing. After the reviews on this page, we show you how to install your bar. We have an exhaustive guide to help you choose the type of pull up bar to buy, whether ceiling or wall mounted, doorway or stand alone.

If you use the bar for kipping, which is what you may be doing if you’re crossfit training or building up upper body strength to do strict pull ups, try to get a model that gives you enough wall clearance for it. If the bar is designed for ceiling mounting but can also be used for wall mounting, low ceiling ones may not give you much clearance because they may be designed to allow tall people to reach full extension. Some low ceiling models come with adjustable height holes for the pull up bar, which may work for you. The distance from the wall should be at least 14″ even if you won’t do kipping. Cross fit pull up bars usually give you about 30″ clearance.
