What are the Best Spin Bikes Under $500?

While the spin bikes by Keiser and Schwinn are the best you can buy and will even stand up to the rigors of gym club use, it’s perfectly fine to choose a less expensive bike for home use, especially if you don’t intend to use it everyday for hours at a time. The best spin bikes under $500 will tick off all the important criteria, like long term durability, riding comfort, smooth pedaling and ability to challenge you with enough resistance levels.

While many newer models feature magnetic resistance where there’s no need to replace parts at all, you probably won’t find them in this price bracket, particularly on spin bikes. Friction pad resistance is much easier to find, and even moderate use for 2-3 years is fine before you have to replace the felt or other material brake pads that wear out in time.

A chain drive is better for club gyms because a belt will stretch with high usage. However, chains require frequent oiling and tightening. A belt drive will last long at home with just 1 or 2 users, and doesn’t need maintenance until it is replaced. A belt is quieter and there’s no need to adjust its alignment now and then. However, a belt will wear out fast if it is not properly aligned, so the crankshaft and flywheel shaft need to be stronger than on a chain drive bike. Which type you choose is really up to you, but you can find both types at this price.

Now we’ll look at our options for best home spinning bike under $500, but for several more options, take a look at the range on Amazon.

If your budget is just $300, we have a few good options for that too. To know what you’re getting with an indoor cycle or other exercise bikes, read our buyer’s guide first.

Sunny Health & Fitness B1002 Indoor Cycle Trainer

Sunny Health & Fitness B1002 Indoor Cycle TrainerThe Sunny Health and Fitness B1002 is one of our top picks for indoor cycle spin bikes overall as seen here, and that is because it provides great value for the price. It is a belt driven bike with a heavy 49 lb flywheel and durable crank system, making for smooth and quiet pedaling over a long duration. Its heavy duty steel frame keeps the unit stable even if pedaling at high speeds and even while standing, so serious fitness enthusiasts will love it.

Resistance is controlled by the twist of a dial that presses a leather pad down on the flywheel. There is a noticeable change in resistance as you move through each level and the highest levels actually simulate cycling up a hill. The press down emergency braking system is also engaged with the same knob.

Two transport wheels on the front legs make it easy to move the bike aside when not in use. A water bottle holder is fitted to the top right side of the flywheel. This bike feels really stable even while standing to pedal, and its feet levelers let you set it up on any surface. The seat is adjustable up and down as well as fore and aft, while the handlebars are adjustable only up and down. It is best used by people with an inseam between 29″ and 40″. The biggest drawback here is that anyone under 5’4″ tall should look elsewhere.

Users love how silent and solid it is, especially if they’re on the big and tall side. Some users recommend replacing the pedals with clipless pedals and if you find the seat not that comfortable (quite common on spin bikes), you can replace it with a saddle type seat too.

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1509 Belt Drive Premium Indoor Cycling Bike

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-B1509 Premium Indoor Cycling BikeThe Sunny Health & Fitness B1509 Belt Drive Premium Indoor Cycling Bike is just as capable of providing you with an effective cardiovascular and aerobic workout as the B1002, but costs a bit less. Its entire frame is made of steel strong enough to support a weight capacity up to 265 lbs. The cushioned handlebars are designed to be easily adjusted up or down and the rider has a choice of multi-grip positions for maximum comfort. Plus, the seat can be moved forward, backward, up and down with a simple twist of a knob to fit your height, giving you a personalized, comfortable ride every time.

The SF-B1509 Indoor Cycling Bike operates quietly and smoothly using a belt drive mechanism. Its flywheel is slightly lighter at 40 pounds, but the bike doesn’t shake or jerk regardless of how intense your workout becomes. If you want to amp up your level of resistance, you can control the micro adjustable friction resistance with a twist of a knob. Additionally, it comes with an emergency press down braking system. Other features included are a steel crank, a convenient bottle holder, and dual action SPD pedals for pedaling forwards or backwards, which is another area where it differs from the B1002.

There are several great attributes associated with the SF-B1509 Indoor Cycling Bike. One favorite attribute loved by customers is that it has a solid, stable steel construction that can last for many years. With adjustable handlebars and seat, you can comfortably accomplish any seated or standing cycling routine. Unlike the B1002, shorter people will feel comfortable on this bike, with an inseam range of 28″ to 39″. If you have limited space, the two rear transportation wheels allow you to easily roll the cycling bike away.

All in all, the B1509 model is every bit as good as the previous one, except that this flywheel is lighter. If SPD pedals are important to you or you’re shorter than 5’4″ then choose this model over the B1002.
